Little Nell

by Megan

I mean, you have to have a life outside of blogging, right?

Yeah so I do theatre. You may not know, but I’ve been involved with theatre for the past 18 years, and I even have a college degree in musical theatre and theatre education. I recently had a reason to write down every show I’ve ever done, and I sadly realized that last year (2013) was the first year since 1996 that I did not do a show! #couldhavesqueezedoneinsomehow

One of my goals for 2014 was to do a show, any show. When we moved to Surprise, I was excited to find out that they had a local community theatre, Ghostlight Theatre. But I got pregnant with Harrison shortly after moving, and we didn’t have an opportunity to work with them for the first year we lived here.

But this February, I decided to audition for their next play, “Little Nell,” and I wound up cast as…Little Nell!

It has been a fantastic experience for me. Truthfully, this style of play (melodrama) is not really my “thing,” but just being in a show again has been really great. First, I got to meet the people involved with the theatre (they rock), and now they actually know who I am and what I can do! Second, I got to get up on a stage and go through a rehearsal process and perform! #beentoolong

This show is super silly, and things go wrong left and right (they’re supposed to…most of them). The audience is encouraged to interact with us, and they are even given foam rocks to throw at the bad guy (sometimes they hit me, and not always on accident)!

It is a short show, just over an hour long, but I’m onstage for almost the entire show, leaving for only one scene. It’s nice to have a good-sized role, not just for ego’s sake (although it does help boost that too), but because it’s fun to have a lot to do and experiment with. In this show, the audience participation aspect is keeping me on my toes and brushing up my improv skills!

And this is kind of silly, but anyone who does theatre knows that it’s like a “theatre bucket list” item to have the final bow in a show. Well I can finally cross that one off my list! But I mean, come on, if your character’s name is the NAME OF THE PLAY, then it’s kind of a given!

It’s been a fun project, and we still have 7 shows left! I’ll be happy to have my schedule free up a bit once it’s over, but Daniel and I are both looking forward to being involved with Ghostlight in the future.

We’ve been lucky to have had consistent theatre, dance, and music opportunities in the years we’ve been married, and I couldn’t be happier to have found a “theatre home” here in Surprise!

Congrats on your final bow! I give you credit for doing theatre; it looks like a blast but I have some horrible stage fright :)

I used to perform all the time during my teen years. Once I got married and had kids, I just haven’t really had the time or desire (or talent? Seems like the competition is pretty stiff, I haven’t kept up with my singing to even know if I can anymore). The hubs and I have season tickets to a local theater called “Desert Star” and they do parodies. There is some audience interaction, no “rocks” to throw, but we are encouraged to cheer and boo.

Megan is being completely modest. She absolutely steals the show! Megan, you are a fantastic addition to the Ghostlight Family and we are so happy you and your family want to be part of this adventure. Here’s to many, many, many more Ghostlight shows. Finally, theatre for the west valley near Surprise! http://www.ghostlightaz.com
