Dia de Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a time to celebrate and remember those who have passed away. Special foods are prepared in honor of, and left for, the souls of the departed. Families gather together and remember relatives that have gone on by telling stories, looking at pictures and even visiting the graves of relatives.

Dia de Los Muertos begins at midnight on Oct 31 and ends on November 2nd. Although it can be a bit “spooky” for many littles, in many parts of North America it’s tradition!

Trust me….the skull is under the cereal…

You may be seeing Sugar Skulls everywhere this year, but did you know that sugar skulls are made as an offer for the deceased during Dia de Los Muertos? They often will have the name of the departed across the forehead of the sugar skull.

There is really no wrong way to make this craft! You can add arms and legs and make the whole skeleton body. Cut eye holes if your kids want to wear them. And don’t forget to snack as you create!

Making a sugar skull craft with cereal

Supplies Needed:

  • White paper plates
  • Black marker
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Colorful cereal- like Trix or Lucky Charms

Time needed: 15 minutes

This sugar skull craft is super easy and fun for the kiddos, and a great way to get into the spooky spirit for Dia De Los Muertos and Halloween!

  1. Cut a white paper plate in the shape of a skull

Try using scissors that cut a decorative edge for a fun look.

  2. Use the black marker to draw a mouth, nose, and eyes

Color them in- remember this is a skull, so they are just holes!

  3. Glue the cereal in decorative patterns and designs on your skull!

I love glue pens that make it really easy to just put a dot of glue wherever you need it.

Have a (spooky) good time!
